Sirens and gunshots are the soundtrack of South Los Angeles, formerly known as South Central. People thought changing the name would change the neighborhood's image, but it hasn't. L.A. is in the midst of a new surge in gang violence that is claiming some very young victims. Last week, 17-year-old Jamiel Andre Shaw, a high school football star, was walking down the street, talking on his cell phone with his girlfriend, when someone came up to him to ask what gang he was in. When Jamiel didn't answer, he was shot to death. His mother, an Army sergeant serving her second tour of duty in Iraq, flew back to bury her son. "This is usual here. I mean, every night you hear fire shots. Every night," says 20-year-old Miguel Lugo
- What prompted the creation of RPW clothing?
RPW clothing is a product of a growing need in our society. There are approximately 24,500 gangs in the U.S. In the year 2000 there were an estimated 750,000 gang members. The 2009 estimate is One Million gang members with the trend continuing to grow. There are approximately 360,000 teenage boys and 32,000 teenage girls in gangs One of the most affected areas is that of South Central LA. With these numbers continuing to grow we felt a call to action. RPW clothing was born with the mission of producing sick clothes with a portion of all the proceeds going to address the need in our society.

a portion of every purchase at RPW goes to provide a safe after-school environment where hundreds of boys and girls in South Central Los Angeles nurture their dreams, participate in tutoring and academic enrichment programs, learn important social skills and are guided to succeed in school and enter college..

RPW or Refocused Priorities Workshop is about taking a look at what is important in your life and using that passion towards something that contributes to the greater good of society.
